An opening became
a bigger idea.

The assignment was to create a Black History Month open. I handled the art direction, design and animation, establishing a visual treatment built around historical imagery, layered type and bold color accents.

I then proposed featuring a key figure in Black history at the end of segments. That expanded the opening into a recurring storytelling format, using a portrait and three facts to put the person at the center.

I combined layered portraits with grain and scratches to bring an archival quality to the imagery. Large typography and dark areas give the information a clear place to land.

I carried red, yellow and green accents, diagonal marks and repeated background type across the package. In the figure features, typography carries the facts while animation controls how they unfold.

I built a reusable template with a historical-figure field and three editable fact fields, separating the content from its presentation.

The structure allows the subject and facts to change while preserving the typography, framing and motion treatment I developed.

I repurposed the visual treatment across different placements, then adapted it again for the mini-documentary Beyond the Block. The title and composition changed to serve the documentary while the color accents, texture and typography connected it to the original work.

I also created landscape, square and portrait program-guide artwork, recomposing the elements for each format.
